In the 1870’s the first metal-framed bicycles were introduced. These high-wheeled bikes were eventually referred to as Penny-farthings because of the two sizes of their wheels. Front wheels could be as wide in diameter as the rider's legs would allow. In the day, a bike could have cost as much as 6 months wages.
