The second piece in The Twelve days of Christmas series is the Woman holding the two turtle doves. Based on this much loved and favorite Christmas carol by the same name, the written lyrics date from 1780 England although the tune goes back much further and is of French origin. Many people believe the song actually has its roots in the 1500s and was part of a catechism lesson. Each Gift had a reference to their faith and teaching. Two turtle doves refers to the Old and New Testaments. It was also described as a memory game for children to play at home. A leader would recite the first verse and another child would do the next and so on until someone missed a verse and had to pay a penalty. Our beautifully dressed woman with the turtle doves is a perfect addition to this series. She is dressed in her most beautiful finery for her true loveś.
