Department 56 - Begging For Soul Cakes - Set of Two

Part of the All Hallows Eve series from Department 56. The old English custom of distributing pieces of sweet, cake-like bread to honor the souls of the dead is one of the ancestors of the American custom of Halloween trick-or-treating. Those begging for cakes would sing droning songs, until they were given what they came for. Then they would go on to the next house, again singing until they where given even more cakes!
