Wooden Duck Shop :: Aunt Liz's Attic :: Gramma Dodi Collection
Dorothy Gillette has been sculpting for many years and the faces she creates are from her imagination.
She starts with clay that is kiln fired. However, she found that she couldn't get the texture/detail that she was looking for. In other words she couldn't obtain the wrinkles and worts (in the case of a witch) that she wanted. So she went to a softer clay that can be cured in the oven. She can color it darker, make the faces appear more weathered etc. She starts with a ball of aluminum foil as the base and then builds the face on the oval ball of foil. She adds the eyebrows, lips, nose from small strips, blends them in. Glass eyes are added at this time if they are used. Once the faces are finished they are then baked, cooled, blush added for cheeks, eyes are painted and then beards or hair added. As for the inspiration, it's all in her head.
